How to get in radio?

I’m 27 and a mom of 3 kids. I didn’t go to college after high school because I had no idea what to do. That was before I discovered radio.
My hubby is a HAM, and I am too. I am a talk radio junkie and a rabid AM DXer at night. It may have taken me a while, but I finally found something that I love and want to make a career of.
Do you think that me being older and having children will put me at a disadvantage for getting an internship at a radio station?

Do I need to go back to school and get a communications degree?

Some Radio/TV Stations require that you are enrolled in an accredited university/college program. Others don’t care and will take anyone since it is free labor for them. When I was in college I wanted to intern at a radio station here in Chicago. I wrote a few letters to various station managers and got a call from one. I went to an interview and was “hired” as an intern for a very popular/well known talk show host. I learned alot about how the station operates from a technical and business standpoint. I didn’t get paid but I got tons of freebies like t-shirts, CD’s, gift cards and free food( lobster and champagne at 5:30 in the morning one time!). So start writing letters/emails to the different stations in your area. Even walk into the offices if you can to show your face and talk to the manager. You are bound to land something.
