4 Tattermunge Maniac
Spells:
4 Lash Out
4 Jaws of Stone
Lands:
24 Mountains
Good start.
I will assume that you want to make this deck as competitive as possible, and that you don’t have any budget restraints. If you do, then try to adapt what I write and be sensible, or ask me again.
First of all, remove land until you are down to about 17 or so. Your creatures are small enough on the mana curve that you don’t want to be clogged down with lands later in the game. 24 lands is a base number, but that is for control and combo decks, not for aggro. Aggro needs no more than 18 lands. I run my kithkin deck with 15 lands, and I have yet to lose a match by getting mana screwed.
Now that you have space to work with, I suggest you add in lands like Fire-lit thicket and splash into green. This gives you access to utility spells such as the awesome Firespout, and the must have in every deck – Tarmogoyf. (Didn’t you hear? They say that mono-anything splash green for ‘Goyf is a competitive deck. They are not wrong. Tarmogoyf is $50 a pop for a reason.)
Change: -10 Mountain, +4 Fire-lit Thicket
Now, the creatures: I like your creatures a lot, because they are the classic choices for aggro – fast, aggressive, and really really annoying. They can simply overrun slower decks, such as control, and they are cheap as hell. Great job.
I don’t like the searblades. You do have things that boost it, but on its own, its bad. They are cut. The Pyre chargers are too expensive. I would rather you play two maniacs or something similar rather than a 1/1 pumper. They are also cut. Soulbrights is gone. The deck will have other ways of getting people trample.
Change: -4 Searblades, -4 Soulbright, -4 Pyre Chargers.
Now you have a gaping hole in your deck. I suggest you fill this with spells rather than creatures, because you have a good amount of creatures as it is. Also, because this deck is aggro, you don’t want to be dead after getting hit with a splitting headache or something similar. Especially when there are so many rock decks running around, which relies on discard to keep you out of options, so, spells are required.
I think we will start with some burn. You want burn, because they can be the final nail in the coffin. Urn spells are essentially creatures, but they are creatures that attack and then die, which is what maniac does most of the time. So, in with the burn.
Changes: +3 Shock, +3 Incinerate, +3 Browbeat,
Now, the cream of the crop: You may want to consider Garruk. Yes, he is very expensive, but he is well worth the cost. A planeswalker can save you for a few turns, giving you the time you need to beat your opponent’s face. You can decide to remove anything for Garruk, really, because he is just sooooo good. Of you do decide to splash green, you can include Firespout, but this is dangerous, since your creatures are all less than 3 toughness. Firespout means resetting the board for everyone. (agaist a treefolk deck, side them out. )
Also, if you splash green, include Tarmogoyf. In ‘Goyf we trust.
Hope that helped!
