What is the difference between GPS and DVD navigation?
I am looking to buy a new car and I wanted a built in navigation, but I continues to see "DVD Navigation" on some models. Is it different than the GPS?
"Navigation DVD" is a type of GPS device. It refers to the storage system used for maps and operation system. Some older vehicles assembled systems used CD-ROM. You can keep a set of map packs on CD and trade them if you entered a different region. DVD based ones allow more detail and areas larger map. The portable units typically use a flash memory. You can download map packs on the Internet and install them as up to days. Some devices have enough storage for packs of cards or have an extra slot for a memory flash card. Some units of the plant using GPS a hard disk drive (HDD) to store map data and OS. Although I am not aware of all portable devices that do, I guess it's possible, as there are some pretty little hard there, and you do not need huge amounts of storage space to store data map for the entire planet. The major drawback of optical disc based storage however, is that you would have to share disk for updates, because they are not designed to allow changes in the data. It's not really practical if you want to keep your cards for be current, because it means having to get a new card drive. The types of flash and hard drive can facilitate updates the data and perhaps slightly more responsive at startup and when searching places on the map. However, for most people, map updates still say go to the dealer, as I have not seen a building with a GPS device something like a USB port to allow the user to update to home.
