Building a superlite desert?
Where can I find information on building a superlite desert? I want a back / mid mounted engine with either rear or all wheel drive. I'm working with limited funds and will use the old junkyard cars / trucks / ATVs most rooms. I need to know what to look for in an engine. Motorcycle, car, truck? I want it very quickly and this power, but also means light being help .. How do I set up a transmission? Do I need PANL on it or just open cage? Do I just pull on the steering system an old car or build my own? How do I set up breaks? What kind of tires should I use? I'm going to shop on earth and gravle. Will need suspension. On an old car or truck? ATV perhaps? What gaps? How do I set up a hand break? I am sure I'm not sure, but that's all I can think of right now.
Let me ask you a few questions … What kind of tools do you have? Do you have at least one welder, bending, or at least have easy access to them. When you say limited funds, how limited are we talking about? Are you will really be running this machine? I'm talking about races sanctioned, where they have established rules for different classes. If this check up on the rules and go from there. It would kind of suck if you built a machine with a 6-cylinder engine in it and it turns out that you could VW engines run in your class. Have you ever thought about a GOCART or buggy? Might be a bit cheaper and easier for a first time build. Do not think you can not get the power of a small Briggs. Some of my friends are hitting in the 70s with a small upper mower Mowers 12 HP.
